“Fuck You!”
I guess it is related to my agenda of ‘fuck you!’ and it is a charming tune too! love it!
PS. and I am not going to say, “not that there is anything wrong with that”, like that asshole Seinfeld.

Ingrained
I was talking to my roommate today and when I told him that losing weight is not so important to me, he was surprised and had a lot of trouble accepting that fact. His refrain was, “Don’t you want to look nice?” :)
He has been trying to get me to run. For him, it seems to be the ultimate litmus test of fitness! Somehow it is very hard for him to accept that people can be fit and be unable to run for a long time. I have always been a sick kid and I never had the lung capacity to run, not to mention that I almost always used to be nursing a cold. Besides, I have been smoking for the last 6 years and that has definitely not helped my lungs either. I really cannot run for more than a couple of minutes but I consider myself fit. Well, fitter than what I was six months ago. I have been going to the gym and have been able to see a noticeable difference in my fitness level but I still cannot run. And my roommate cannot accept the fact that running is not the ultimate thing.
“Don’t you want to look nice?”
I mean what the fuck man! Why do I have to measure up to your or the society’s idea what a nice looking guy is? Yeah, I know that women do not find me attractive because I am brown, short and fat. But I would not like to be with a woman who put those qualities over my other qualities. So there…
Asshole.

Susan Boyle
The internet has a new sensation. Her name is Susan Boyle.
The video is out here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY
Here is a woman who is 40, who admits that she has never been on a date and never been kissed so proudly who has the self-confidence to come out there to perform on stage. She gets a lot of dirty looks from everyone from the judges to the audience and when she does sing, and she sings well by the way, she shuts them all up. But wait a minute, let us slow things down and show you the bigotry frame by frame.
The first shot of Ms Boyle shows her eating a burger. Look at her, she is in the background with two other females who look more like the conventional women who come on these shows to contrast her appearance with and she is porking on a burger. Brilliant introduction, isn’t it?

Let’s us look at the reactions that are shown on screen. Here is the first judge, I believe this is Simon Cowell:

Susan immediately reacts by putting her hand on her hip quite forcefully, obviously indicating her displeasure at the blatant bigotry and the audience thinks it is funny! ha ha ha

One has got to love her attitude here. She does a little hip shaking here but unlike Shakira, she gets this reaction from another judge:

“What’s the dream?”
“I am trying to be a professional singer”
And she is immediately judged by a member of the audience (the camera only shows one person but one can safely assume the rest of the audience thinks the same way too).

And here is another audience member, after a few seconds:

Ok, now play:

Wait for it….

And now she sings…

Oh my GOD! She can sing!!!
The best part that I liked was after she was done with the song, she blows a kiss, turns and almost exits stage left.

It was as if she was saying, “fuck you!” and is quite amazing of her. She was pretty good and she was judged purely on her looks at first but somehow that was ok as long as she did not sing well. When she does sing well, it is a surprise but why? What has your looks got to do with your talent to sing?
Why is it ok to deride a person like her? What if she hadn’d had a great voice? Would it have been ok to have been as ass as the judges and the audience were before she started singing? And it is not just the judges who were the jerks but look at the way she was presented to us. We are introduced to her with visuals of her eating something and then later as a social outcast (never been kissed, has cats, etc) and then the two idiots on stage left keep telling us, “you didn’t expect that, did you?” I mean, what the fuck! Why is it ok to present her so? I know these “talent” shows are probably the most frivolous shows on TV but to me, they show how deep the “looks” bigotry is. She is not desi, she is not a man and she is not really that fat but yet her experience so much mirrors mine in a lot of respect. I can see people strangers behave differently with me and with my thin friends. The receptionist in my office talks much more politely to my friend, who recently joined my company, than she does with me. The bias I face is pretty much the same.
I wish Ms Boyle all the best in her efforts to be a singer but nothing is going to change the attitude this world has towards people like her and me.

“In more than 20 years of medical practice, I have yet to meet a patient who chose to be fat. I have also yet to meet a patient who chose to have diabetes, wished for a heart attack or longed for cancer. But while we often look at diabetes, heart disease or cancer as the result of bad genes, bad luck or both, most people attribute obesity to simply making poor choices. Why can’t people with excess weight just push away the food and get off their butts?”

Cool! A doctor who is more or less on the right page when it comes to obesity. And he has a blog (http://www.drsharma.ca/) too!

Other people’s addictions
A few days ago, a guy walks up to our table when we were having dinner. He seemed to know my friend and he had a plate full of sweets. He talked about how he used to eat three or four sweets at once when he was in Calcutta and said that he did not gain weight probably because he walked a lot.
The more I observe the eating patterns of people around me, something that I have been doing after I realised that I was an addict, I have realised that a lot of people are addicted to sugar but I am guessing that they the difference is something called BMR. People with low BMR would tend to get fat easier. Reason for that could be bad genes or old age. BMR does decrease with age and people do tend to get fatter when they get older and their eating patterns do not change.
There is also research that shows that some people do tend to have lower BMR because of bad genes. For these people, normal amounts of “walking” is going to mitigate the effects of the sugar addiction.
I wish more people will realise this. But I have also come to the conclusion that people are morons…
